Happy New Racing Year!
Rolex 24 Hour Race 2011
Long Beach Grand Prix

Tax day has come and gone, the weather is starting to warm and most of you have gotten your racecars out of winter storage.  It is now time to start burning-up some pavement!

As most of you are aware, loud race cars are less and less tolerated at our tracks.  Burns Stainless has been supplying mufflers to racers for nearly a decade and we have learned many things.  Below is the first article in a series on sound and muffler technology with the goal of helping you understand the various issues surrounding racecar sound management.  You will also enjoy a short introduction to Burns customer's Blackdog racing and Goodwin Competition.

Muffler Technology - Don't Get Blackflagged Again!

Getting blackflagged is no fun!

Over the past few years, as residential homes have been built closer and closer to race tracks, there has been a strong movement towards reducing the sound from race cars.  At some tracks, such as Laguna Seca in California, the sound limits have become so low, 92 dB in this case, that some street cars with OE exhaust systems will not pass without modification.  Case in point is a late-model  Porsche 911 GT3 (997) .

The OE exhaust is equipped with valves that by-pass the main mufflers at high rpm conditions.  With the bypass activated, a GT3 will get black-flagged at the track. The bypass valve on the GT3 can be electronically, or mechanically "bypassed" so that the car will pass sound, but many racers would prefer to shed some of the weight of the OS exhaust. I have heard other stories of cars with mufflers strapped to the rear bumper just to be able to race.  Though exhaust muffler technology is the focus of this article, it is important to note that the main sources of noise from an automobile also include intake noise and general mechanical noise. Headquartered outside of Chicago, in Lincolnshire, IL, Black Dog Racing has eight seasons of racing under it's belt. Under the guidance of Team Manager Ray Sorenson, with the team since 2003, the Blackdog Corvettes are highly competitive in the popular SCCA Pro World Challenge GT series. Ray started his career in motorsports 27 years ago and has worked with some of the finest teams and drivers in the business including Newman/Haas Racing, Brumos Racing, Michael Andretti  and Nigel Mansell. His multi-faceted role at Blackdog includes being the Engineer and Crew Chief. He oversees the chassis development program, makes all racing decisions and deals with the logistical issues for the team. The team is owned by Tony Gaples who is also their number 1 driver.

Blackdog engines are built by Goodwin Competition in Omro, Wisconsin.  Run by Todd Goodwin, the engine shop specializes in many areas including pulling trucks, off-road-truck as well as road racing.  They have been instrumental in the success of 7-time Pro-Lite Champion Jeff Kincaid.  Burns Stainless works closely with Todd to help in the development of his exhaust header systems. Todd utilizes the Burns Stainless X-Design exhaust program to arrive at a baseline exhaust configuration for his customers. Todd then builds a dyno exhaust system incorporating a Burns Stainless Dyno-Sys adjustable collector and with painstaking care, optimizes the engine/exhaust package on his DTS engine dynamometer.

Black Dog Speed Shop was born out of the success of Black Dog Racing and is committed to providing the highest quality aftermarket performance parts for C5 and C6 Corvettes for the street and for the track.  In addition to their own race-bred parts, Blackdog is a dealer for some of the finest performance and racing suppliers including Brembo, SKF, BBS, Tilton, Detroit Speed and Dynacorn.

Burns Stainless wishes to thank you for your business and we look forward to serving you in the future.  Please do not hesitate to give us a call if you need any assistance with a project.
