For those low-ground clearance applications, Burns Stainless offers oval tubing made from 0.065" wall 304 stainless steel in 3", 3-1/2" and 4" equivalent sizes. This is the same tubing used in NASCAR Sprint Cup exhausts. Tubing bends (pictured) are available in 3" and 3-1/2" sizes also. The 45, 60 and 90 degree bends can be purchased in a short and long centerline bend radius allowing for nesting of the tubes. Round-to-oval transitions are also available in butt-weld and slip-on configurations.

Greetings!
Last month I mused of those great craftsman of the past and the wonderful race cars they fabricated. It occurred to me however, that I have the pleasure of working with many great exhaust fabricators today. These "geniuses and lunatics" include men like Jack Burns, Calvin Elston of Elston Exhaust, Wayne Church with Roush-Yates Engines, Andy Bondio of Bondio Fabrication, Chris Parker of CPR Fabrications as well as others. In a day of CNC machines and CAD drawings, these guys provide the artistic talent and craftsman skills needed to bring together the graceful forms of modern racecars
This month's newsletter brings the second installment in a series on the skill of welding as applied to exhaust fabrication. Also, learn about 304SS oval tubing and bends. Finally, there is a spotlight on our longtime customer Mike Edwards and his YoungLife Race Team.
Have a question regarding exhaust? ASK US and we will answer it in a future edition of our newsletter. Also, please feel free to forward this information on to your colleagues and friends.

Mike Edwards Motorsports and the YoungLife Race Team compete in the Pro Stock Division of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Mike and his team have had a tremendous season and is currently sitting number 2 in the NHRA Pro-Stock standings and was the first Pro-Stocker to break 212 mph. One of Mike's secrets is that his engines are prepared by their in-house engine shop run by Nick Ferri and Paul Hoskins.
Mike Edwards and his team have partnered with YoungLife to bring a message of hope to youth throughout the United States. At each national event, the Mike Edwards Motorsports Team will host a group of youth who participate in several exciting activities as they learn about the sport of drag racing. Mike along with his wife, Lisa, and the team members share the great news of God's love for them through Jesus Christ and how Christ has made a great difference in their lives.
Mike Edwards and his Pro Stock Pontiac are funded by several Christian foundations who make it possible for him to carry the YoungLife logo.

Welding Exhaust Systems - Part 2
As mentioned in Part 1 of this series, TIG should be employed when welding thin sections of exhaust tubing, especially when using specialized alloys such as stainless steel or Inconel. The header in Figure 1 is an Inconel Pro-Stock header fabricated by Jack Burns from 0.028" wall tubing. The considerable control of the welding process by the operator and the inert shielding gas help assure proper weld strength for these alloys that have a propensity to form unwanted oxides during welding. This allows for proper welding of thin walled tubing commonly used in motorsports exhaust applications. Part 2 of the series will focus on the proper preparation of the tube sections for welding.
