Welding
Exhaust Systems - Part 1
Welding is one of the most important
fabrication techniques in motorsports. Today's race shop welders need to be
well versed in applying welding techniques to various applications and materials
including steel, chrome-moly, stainless steel, aluminum and even exotic materials
like Inconel™. As there are numerous
excellent sources of information on welding, including the American Welding Society (AWS),
this series of articles is not intended to be a thorough examination of the
topic. I would only like to touch upon a few important aspects related to
welding as applied to exhaust system alloys such as stainless steel and Inconel™ as well as aluminum.

Greetings!
In preparing this newsletter, I recalled photos of those beautiful headers
on the Gurney Indy cars or the GT-40s constructed by men like Pete
Wilkins. The sinuous curvature of the pipes were a memorial to the talents of
these craftsmen. I am jealous of those of you out there who actually saw these
cars race in their heydey. If you haven't, then you owe it to yourself to
attend a vintage racing event such as the Monterey Historics to see these
cars on the track, sometimes piloted by the likes of drivers like Dan Gurney
himself.
The feature article this month is the first in a series on the
invaluable craftsman skill of welding. Also, see how Burns Stainless exhaust
technology aided our own John Howards NASA racing endeavors. And finally, there
is a spotlight on our longtime customer Jackson Engine Tech.
Have a
question regarding exhaust? ASK US and we will
answer it in a future edition of our newsletter. Also, please feel free to
forward this information on to your colleagues and
friends. |
Charlie Westcott's '68 Hemi Barracuda, aka War
Fish, has set the NHRA super-stock SS/AH class on its head. For the
past 5 years, Charlie has helped his fellow "hemi-heads" by providing race-proven engine packages,
parts and accessories for this class that has become a favorite with the
fans. In the business since 1992, they use Burns Stainless products because
"It is a no brainer. It is the best stuff
period! There are a lot of cheaper collectors out there, but my customers want
to go fast and they do not care what it costs." They first worked with
Burns Stainless when they ran in Comp Eliminator. The first header that Burns
Stainless designed for Westcott picked their Comp Eliminator car up 15 hp, and
they have been believers ever since. When their customers need headers, they
always spec Burns components. Charlie's cars are built by chassis builder and
Burns Stainless customer Gary Jennings located in Mt. Juliet,
Tennessee.. When asked what he believes are his organization's greatest
achievements, Charlie responded: - Total domination of the hemi class
over the last 5 years. - Winning the US Nationals 3 out of the past 4 years
('05, '06 and '08) in NHRA SS/AH. - First pass in the 8.40s by customer Fred
Henson's, with an et of 8.48 sec, on Burns collectors. - First pass in the
8.30s in War Fish with an et of 8.38, also with Burns collectors. - Top
speed SS/AH record of 159.95 mph. - Winning 19 out of 26 Hemi Shootouts. -
Current record holder 8.38 157.06 at Maple Grove, Redding PA. - Points
Championship 2 out of the last 3 years. - Hemi Challenge Series '08 winner

For the past four years, Burns
Stainless' very own John Howard has been racing an H4-class Honda Civic in the
local National Auto Sport Association (NASA)
Honda Challenge series. In late 2005, John began his race car build and
debuted with his entry during the 2006 series, while still attending the
University of California Irvine, seeking his BS in Mechanical Engineering.
Over the years he has improved both the car as well as his driving
abilities. After earning a pole position and spending some time at the front of
the pack in 2008, he set his sights on the 2008 NASA National Championship held
at Mid-Ohio Raceway. This would be
John's first time at the track and his first ever National Championship, so it
was a very exciting venture.
