Repacking Mufflers - It's Not Just For
Noise
One of the most
important features of the Burns Ultra-Light Motorsports
Mufflers is the ability to easily repack the muffler. Depending upon the
use of the muffler and the type of packing material used, mufflers may need to
be repacked after every race, or may last for a season or more of racing. In
general, the closer the muffler is to the exhaust header, the faster the muffler
packing will degrade. When muffler packing degrades, not only does the sound of
the exhaust become louder; surprisingly, engine performance can also
suffer.
Contrary to popular
belief, a loud muffler indicates "wasted horsepower." A well packed muffler not
only absorbs sound waves, it also flows much like a straight pipe. Whereas
airflow in an unpacked muffler is disrupted as gases flow through the perforated
core of the muffler contributing to turbulence and back-pressure. Also, an
empty muffler may act like an expansion chamber, altering the tune of the
exhaust pipe. Some race teams have been known to actually weigh mufflers after
a race, and if the weight loss of the muffler exceeds a predetermined amount,
the muffler is replaced with a freshly packed muffler. The key lesson is
that muffler packing is a consumable item. Mufflers that have been in service
without inspection are likely giving away horsepower. Please contact Burns
Stainless to purchase repack kits that will return your muffler to its original
performance.

Burns
Ultra-Light Muffler - New Design for 2009!
Burns
Stainless Ultra-light Motorsports Mufflers
are proving very popular in all areas of motorsports including road racing,
autocross, drag racing, boat racing and even some hot-street applications.
These mufflers have been redesigned and updated for 2009. New design features include a "floating"
replaceable core minimizing internal stress and allowing for faster and easier
rebuilds; new fastener design providing for easier removal of bolts during
repacking; and a new outlet design allowing for the muffler to be used with
turndowns or installed within an existing undercar exhaust system. The mufflers
are still constructed from TIG-welded 304SS providing a durable and lightweight
package. The standard single-stage mufflers are available in tube sizes ranging
from 2" ID to 5" ID. Lengths from 6" to 17" are generally available from stock
(see list of stock sizes). Custom lengths are available by special
order.
Collector-mufflers combinations are
also available. Utilizing our proprietary X-Design program to specify the
proper merge collector and muffler size,
performance can actually be improved! Also new for 2009 are two-stage mufflers incorporating a
second "baffle"-stage. The baffle stage is comprised of an expansion, two
V-angle baffles and a section of woven metal cloth. Combined with the
first-stage absorption section, these mufflers are 3-5 dB quieter than a similar
sized single stage muffler. The best news is that track testing on a sprint car
showed no loss in power. These mufflers are in stock in 2-1/2" ID to 4" ID and
17" length. Custom sizes are also
available. |
After spending over 17 years focusing on NASCAR CUP and pioneering several
advancements in exhaust technology in that field, Elston Exhaust has inevitably been
drawn into almost every area of motorsports by customers seeking the most
powerful exhaust systems available. Elston Exhaust's goal is to help engine builders and racers around the world
realize how much they have been missing in their exhaust systems and driving
innovation in the custom header market as a whole.
From the first day of building headers Elston has used Burns Stainless
products, and over the years they have proven to be of the highest quality and
achieved the highest performance, period. |

Packing Materials
Selection
of muffler packing material is important for getting the best performance
possible out of the muffler. Burns Stainless offers 4 different muffler
packings glasmat, stainless steel scrubble, glasmat/scrubble hybrid and
stainless mesh. Glasmat is a high temperature fiberglass material. It is
an excellent choice for muffler packing as it is lightweight and inexpensive.
The drawback to glasmat is that it has an upper temperature limit of around
1000F. Also, high intensity acoustic pressure waves can break-up the fibers
causing the glasmat to essentially disintegrate. Stainless steel
scrubble is essentially coarse stainless steel wool having the appearance of
milling machine shavings. This material performs very well as a packing
material but is heavier than glasmat and more expensive. We have not found any
substantive difference in muffling performance of the scrubble as compared with
glasmat with well-packed mufflers. Glasmat/scrubble hybrid packing was
developed for use in larger diameter muffler cases in order to improve the
performance of the packing yet reduce the cost and weight penalties of
scrubble. These large diameter mufflers were initially developed for endurance
racing, so muffler packing life was critical. The hybrid solution performs well
in these applications. Most recently, for some of the most extreme
applications, such as 24 hour endurance racing, stainless steel mesh has been
developed as a packing material. Stainless mesh, is extremely durable material
but heavier and more costly still. Most Burns mufflers are packed
standard with glasmat. As mentioned above, the 6.25" OD mufflers are packed
with glasmat/scrubble hybrid material. The SM-250-350-17 is packed standard
with scrubble. Any muffler can be ordered with scrubble or stainless mesh
packing, or can be added to the muffler on a special order basis. We normally
recommend that customers initially use glasmat packing and evaluate the life
span of the packing in their application. If the life of the packing is too
short, then upgrading to scrubble packing is
warranted. | |
