What Is
The Big Deal With Aluminum?
Aluminum is widely used in racing
to make everything from radiators to pistons to intake manifolds. However, we
would never recommend aluminum for exhaust systems! The properties of aluminum
that make it so attractive to racers include light weight, strength,
fabricability and corrosion resistance. Aluminum is approximately 1/3 the
weight of steel, yet some aluminum alloys exhibit tensile strengths greater than
some low carbon steels. Many alloys can be heat treated to improve strength
properties. Aluminum is available in many wrought forms such as tubing,
extruded shapes, sheet and bar. Aluminum can also be cast using a variety of
foundry methods using moderate strength heat treatable alloys. Forging can also
be used to form aluminum. This material can be fastened with rivets, bolts, or
welding. Welded fabrications can also be heat treated. MORE... |

Greetings!
Greetings from Burns Stainless LLC! This edition
of our Burns Stainless Newsletter highlights aluminum tubing for use in
intercooler piping, water lines and other fluid lines in a race vehicle. Also
discussed are the Adel-Wiggins flexible tubing connectors. Roush Yates Engines
is our featured customer of the month.

Wiggins clamps are one of the most
innovative products available to connect aluminum tubing. Originally designed
over 30 years ago to seal fuel transfer conduit systems for aircraft
applications, the Adel-Wiggins W-900 series clamp has
become the connector de rigueur for many
motorsports applications including intercooler piping, fuel lines and cooling
lines. These connectors are designed to meet the stringent military
requirements of MIL-C-22263.
The lightweight
coupling assembly is comprised of two aluminum alloy ferrules, an anodized
sleeve (or body) and a lightweight clamshell clamp with a unique latch closure.
The aluminum ferrules are circumferentially sealed using standard AS568 o-rings and are butt-welded
to the base aluminum tube. The o-ring material must be carefully chosen based
on the application and subject fluid. The hard anodized sleeve provides the
sealing surface for the o-rings. The anodized sleeve offers a smooth durable
surface providing a long service life. The clamshell clamp is the most
unique component of the connector assembly. The clamshell design captures the
sleeve and ferrules allowing for up to 0.25" of axial movement and +/-4° of
axial deflection. The uncommon latching system allows for one-handed
installation appreciated by NASCAR crew members when installing
in hard-to-reach locations. The characteristic "click" of the closure assures a
properly installed connection, even if it cannot be visually checked. The
positive latching device also eliminates the need for safety wire and the
innovative electrical bonding feature provides electrical grounding necessary
for fuel applications.
The connectors can be used in applications with
operating temperatures ranging from 120F to 450F (suitable o-ring materials must
be used). The operating pressure of the connector is 125 psig with a burst
pressure of 375 psig. Service life has been tested to over 28,000 cycles with
3° of flexure. Burns Stainless LLC stocks the
W900-series connectors for tubing OD sizes of ½", 5/8", ¾" 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2",
1-3/4", 2", 2-1/2" 3", 3-1/2" and 4". O-rings may be purchased from Mcmaster-Carr. O-ring size can be
found here.
